On this day, for the first time in history, a car was used in a robbery

Interestingly, the first car theft in history took place five years before the date mentioned in the subtitle and just ten years after the automobile's birth. However, it was quite mundane: on June 8, 1896, Baron de Zuylen de Nieuwevelt's Peugeot Type 3 was stolen from his garage by... the baron's personal mechanic.

There are three versions of how this happened. According to the first, both the car and the thief were recovered. According to the second, only the car was recovered. The third theory is that neither was found, and the thief managed to get the money (the car was "pre-ordered") and leave France.

It's surprising how this "rhymes" with the current Louvre heist. Two robbers were apparently detained there, too, but so far there's been little progress, as the jewels themselves have still not been found—and in the days since the robbery, according to experts, they should most likely have been turned into precious scrap metal.

As for what we started with, there's even less information about it online, other than that it happened in Paris, where, during a store robbery on October 27, 1901, the robbers were the first in history to escape in a car.

Of course, some might think that, given that the cars were manufactured in 1901, there wasn't much point. However, that's not true. For example, the Mercedes 35 PS, produced that year (see photo), had a top speed of 86 km/h, and his average speed in races was 51.4 km/h. This means it was impossible to catch him in anything other than the same car.
