Turkish authorities reported the detention from March 19 to 23 of 1,133 participants in the protests that erupted in the country after the detention of the opposition mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya accused the organizers and protesters of abusing the right to assemble and demonstrate, attempting to disrupt public order, provoking street events and attacking police.
123 police officers were injured during the demonstrations.
“Legal proceedings are ongoing against those who attack our police, damage public property and threaten the safety of our people. 1,133 suspects have been detained in unlawful acts committed between March 19 and March 23, 2025,” Yerlikaya wrote.
Among the detainees, individuals linked to 12 different terrorist organizations have been found.
