In a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the Russian dictator thanked North Korea for its support and assistance in the war against Ukraine, calling the cooperation between the countries a strategic partnership.

In a letter marking the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, Putin recalled how units of the Soviet Red Army and North Korean troops fought together to end Japan's colonial occupation, The Guardian reports.

“The bonds of militant friendship, goodwill, and mutual assistance that were forged during the war remain strong and reliable even today,” Putin said.

In his letter, the dictator called the actions of North Korean troops sent to participate in hostilities in Ukraine “heroic.”

“This fully proved the heroic participation of DPRK soldiers in the liberation of the Kursk region from Ukrainian occupiers,” he said.
