Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated that under no circumstances will he support the European Commission's proposal to grant Ukraine a reparations loan from frozen Russian assets if these funds are used for military purposes.

He sent an official letter to the new President of the European Council, António Costa. Fico warned that at the upcoming meeting of EU leaders, he would block any decisions providing for the financing of Ukraine's military needs for 2026-2027.

"I clearly and unequivocally express my position on the military conflict in Ukraine. There is no military solution to this conflict. The EU's strategy on the conflict is wrong and ineffective, and continuing the war is just senseless killing without strengthening Ukraine's position in the event of peace talks. Under no circumstances will I support any decision to finance Ukraine's military needs in which the Slovak Republic would have to participate. At the same time, I respect the sovereign right of each EU member state to make decisions on this issue," he said.

He cites his peaceful policy as the main reason for this decision, which does not allow him to vote for the allocation of tens of billions of euros for the war.

He noted his support for the peace initiatives of US President Donald Trump. According to Fico, the use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's defense needs could threaten US plans, as Trump intends to use these resources for Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.

Fico criticized Ukraine, mentioning the corruption scandals that “we all hear about.” Fico reproached Kiev for stopping gas transit, which, according to him, caused losses to his country.

Fico assured that his government remains a responsible and supportive player in humanitarian issues. He recalled that Slovakia has taken in nearly 200,000 Ukrainian refugees, is working on new energy and rail links, and is repairing border crossings.

Regarding European integration, the prime minister expressed support for Ukraine's accession to the EU, but noted that there is a growing number of skeptics among member states regarding the prospects for Kyiv's rapid accession.
