Japan will join NATO's initiative to supply Ukraine with US-made ammunition and equipment, under which it will purchase non-lethal equipment and gear.
Japan will soon officially announce its plan to join the initiative (PURL), NHK reports.
Japan will provide funding only for non-lethal defense equipment and gear, which is likely to include radar systems and body armor.
Japan has informed several NATO members and Ukraine of this plan.
One NATO representative noted that even non-lethal equipment is extremely important for Ukraine, adding that Japan's participation in the initiative is a significant step forward.
