In December, the final sections of a 280-kilometer fence on the border between Latvia and Russia were completed. Construction of the fence took several years and was one of the country's largest infrastructure projects in the field of national security.
The total budget amounted to €166 million, with six contractors participating in the construction. In some marshy areas, the process was particularly difficult and the fence had to be erected on pontoons, according to LSM.
Another €20 million will be invested next year in the development of infrastructure for patrolling and technical control measures, with this work due to be completed by the end of 2026.
Border guards and the Ministry of Internal Affairs are currently conducting joint inspections of the completed fence and checking its quality.
The Border Guard Service noted that the situation on the Latvian-Russian border is generally stable, but there are isolated cases of illegal crossings. According to border guards, the fence has made their work much easier.
Latvia completed the nearly 145 km long fence on the border with Belarus in the summer of 2024.
