Nightclub roof collapses in Dominican Republic: nearly 100 dead

The disaster killed at least 98 people and injured more than 160, AP reported.

Rescue crews continue to work at the scene of the tragedy, removing debris and searching for possible survivors.

Particular attention is being paid to three areas of the club where sounds can be heard coming from beneath the rubble. Together with firefighters and other services, crews are using special equipment to pull out people trapped under the rubble.

The victims included politicians and famous athletes, including Northwest Montecristi Governor Nelsi Cruz, sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz.

She managed to contact President Luis Abinader before disappearing from sight. It has been officially confirmed that Cruz died of her injuries at the hospital.

The tragedy occurred during a concert attended by numerous attendees, including former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.

Rescue crews continue to remove debris, looking for possible survivors. National lawmaker Bray Vargas and famed singer Rubby Perez, whose fate is still unknown, are also among the injured.

Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised that rescue services would work continuously to help the injured.

Officials have yet to determine the cause of the roof collapse and the investigation is ongoing.
