On this day 168 years ago, the first football club in history was founded

Typically, such memorable events and dates are controversial. But in this case, FIFA's official position is that Sheffield FC, founded on the foundations of a cricket club, is considered the first football club in history.

In Sheffield, home to half a million people, there are currently three football clubs with names that include references to the city. Sheffield United, which previously played in the top league, now competes in the second division. Sheffield Wednesday also plays in the second division and has won four English championships. Both clubs were also founded on the foundations of cricket clubs. The first club in history currently plays in the eighth division of the domestic championship.

This past July, a match commemorating the oldest football derby in history, Sheffield vs. Hallam, which began on December 26, 1860, at Sandigate Stadium, was held. Unlike their opponents, Hallam, who, incidentally, are the first club competition winners in football history (the Judan Cup, 1867), continue to play (albeit with long breaks), but at an amateur level.
