Rebellion against Starmer brewing in the UK

Supporters of Starmer have privately accused Health Secretary Wes Strating of plotting to replace the prime minister, recognizing his weakened position after months of rebellion within the Labour Party and consistently low approval ratings, according to Bloomberg.

They argue that any attempt to remove Starmer could cause market turmoil and undermine the government's finances.

A spokesman for Strating called allegations that the minister was seeking to replace Starmer categorically false.

Another official noted that Downing Street had gone into “bunker mode” and started “shooting in all directions.”

Over the past week, the prime minister's team has received new information indicating that Strating was actively preparing a coup. Strating's spokesman again denied these allegations.

The exchange between Starmer and Strating's supporters comes as the government prepares to unveil its budget on November 26, which Finance Minister Rachel Reeves has warned will be difficult.

They suggest that Downing Street officials are already concerned that the spending plan — including the potential reversal of the party's promise not to raise overall taxes — could jeopardize the leadership.

Supporters of the prime minister recently held a meeting with investors, at which they were told that any alternatives to Starmer and Reeves would lead to a significant increase in government bond yields, which could threaten further destabilization of the government's finances.

The budget that Reeves is expected to present at the end of this month is expected to test the party's promise not to raise income tax, which some of Starmer's supporters believe could jeopardize his position. This promise was central to the election campaign that helped the Labour Party come to power for the first time in 14 years.
