The US State Department supports a complete and unconditional ceasefire.
According to Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Piggott, the department continues to encourage direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine with the aim of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire and an agreed peaceful settlement, RBC-Ukraine reports.
“We support further calls for a complete, unconditional ceasefire. Ukraine's calls for a complete, unconditional ceasefire, in particular a complete halt to all strikes on civilian and critical infrastructure,” Pigott said.
According to him, the State Department welcomed the news that Russia and Ukraine had agreed on another exchange of prisoners, especially the seriously ill and wounded.
When asked whether the department considered the third round of negotiations a missed opportunity, given the massive Russian attacks and the absence of a ceasefire on the agenda, Pigott said that President Donald Trump had spoken out clearly many times about Russia's actions, especially in recent weeks, and had been very consistent and open about it.
“He has repeatedly stated that we want the parties to continue these direct negotiations to achieve a ceasefire — a comprehensive ceasefire — and, ultimately, an agreed peace settlement,” he said.
