Senators Jeanne Shaheen of the Democratic Party and Lindsey Graham of the Republican Party expressed concern that the recently adopted law, which makes NABU and SAP dependent on the Prosecutor General, undermines much of the progress made in the fight against corruption.
Shakhin and Graham noted that since the Revolution of Dignity, Ukraine has made significant progress in the fight against corruption, according to European Truth.
“We fear that the law recently passed by the Verkhovna Rada and signed by President Zelensky undermines much of this progress and contradicts Ukraine's extraordinary fighting spirit, as well as the expectations of Ukrainian citizens and the international community,” they said.
The senators emphasized that one of the most common arguments in favor of ending support for Ukraine is that it is allegedly riddled with corruption.
“We recognize that Ukraine continues to make progress on this front and urge the government to refrain from any actions that undermine this progress,” Shahin and Graham said.
They expressed their conviction that it is in the interests of both Ukraine and the United States to meet the expectations of society and ensure reliable governance, which will become the basis for Ukraine's economic prosperity and further American investment.
