On this day in 1954, Bill Haley & His Comets recorded the first famous rock and roll song.
Technically, International Rock and Roll Day, which is celebrated on April 13th, could have been celebrated on the 12th, depending on what time zone you live in.
Because, if we're talking about the United States, New York time, Bill Haley & His Comets entered Pythian Temple Studios to record "Rock Around the Clock" for Decca Records on April 12, 1954. Two versions were recorded, and one was later edited together.
There were two funny things about the recording. First, no one thought "Rock Around the Clock" was anything special at the time of recording, as evidenced by the fact that it was on the B-side of the single. Second, since the term "rock and roll" didn't yet exist, the song's genre was labeled "foxtrot".
This reissue put Rock Around the Clock at number one in the US charts for eight weeks straight. So we can celebrate the birthday of rock and roll for the third time in connection with this event - which would be quite in the spirit of rock and roll.
