Trump and Putin to meet at US military base

After lengthy behind-the-scenes discussions, the American and Russian sides came to the conclusion that the only place capable of providing the necessary level of security for this historic event was the Elmendorf-Richardson military base on the northern outskirts of Anchorage. The White House tried to avoid the scenario of hosting the Russian delegation at an American military base, CNN reports.

There were few places that would be suitable for such a meeting, especially given the arrest warrant for Putin issued by the International Criminal Court in 2023.

With this in mind, Russia rejected the European option, even cities such as Vienna or Geneva, where US and Russian leaders had met since the Cold War. Although Putin himself suggested the United Arab Emirates as a perfectly acceptable option, many in the White House wanted to avoid another long trip to the Middle East after Trump's visit in May.

According to sources, the final choice narrowed down to Alaska and Hungary, but Putin unexpectedly agreed to a meeting on US soil, on land that was once part of the Russian Empire.

“I think it is very important that the Russian president comes to our country, rather than us going to him or even to some third country,” Trump said.
