US President Donald Trump is sure he saved NATO and that without him, the North Atlantic Alliance would no longer exist.
Trump noted that it was under his influence that NATO member countries agreed to increase defense spending, according to European Truth.
“I am the one who saved NATO. I am the one who made them pay 5% of GDP. It was 2%, and they weren't paying. Now they pay 5%. I am the one who saved NATO,” he said.
According to Trump, if he were not the US president, NATO would not exist.
When asked if he was considering withdrawing the US from NATO, Trump replied: “Well, maybe NATO would be upset if I did that. Maybe NATO would save a lot of money. But I like NATO.”
He said he wonders whether NATO would come to the US's aid in the event of a threat.
“Will they support us? I'm not sure they will. You know, we spend a lot of money on NATO. And I'm not sure they do,” Trump added.
