Trump shown plan for war against Iran

The meeting of the region's top military commander took place on the same day that representatives from the US and Iran held indirect talks in Geneva on Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missiles, ABC News reports.

Neither side announced that an agreement had been reached. Iran's foreign minister said that progress had been made and that technical talks would continue next week in Vienna.

Several Republicans and some Trump administration officials have privately advocated in recent days that Israel take the initiative in striking Iran rather than the US launching military action.

It was not immediately clear whether Trump, who is said to be increasingly frustrated by Iran's refusal to agree to his demands to halt uranium enrichment and limit its ballistic missile program, supported such a plan.

A joint US-Israel operation is still possible, as the US has deployed an impressive number of ships and fighter jets to the region, all within striking distance of Iran.

Political analysts believe that proposals for Israel to strike first are likely intended to serve as a kind of political cover for Republicans in Congress who are facing a difficult election year. Trump campaigned on a promise to end wars, not start them.

If Israel strikes Iran, representatives of the US Department of Defense predict that Iran will almost certainly respond. Trump will then be able to claim that US intervention in the conflict is consistent with its long-standing policy of protecting Israel.
