Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has expressed confidence that Hungarians in his poll on Ukraine's accession to the EU will support the government's position and vote against it.
"In the long term, Ukraine wants to maintain an army of one million people, and the maintenance of this army will be paid for by us Europeans, instead of strengthening its own Western European armed forces. Hungary wants to keep Ukraine outside the EU because if we let it in, it will drink up all the resources like a sponge," he said.
He said Ukraine posed an energy threat, complaining about the EU's intentions to stop buying energy resources from Russia, Telex reported.
According to Orban, without gas and oil from Russia, Hungary will have to pay an additional 800 billion forints a year for gas from other sources.
By his calculations, Hungarians would have to pay twice as much for electricity and heating bills would quadruple.
“Funds earmarked for reducing utility costs will thus evaporate,” he said.
