US has imposed a “quarantine” on Venezuelan oil

Washington is currently more interested in using economic rather than military means to put pressure on Caracas, Reuters reports.

“Although military options still exist, the focus is first on economic pressure through sanctions to achieve the outcome the White House is seeking,” the source said.

US President Donald Trump has not publicly disclosed his exact intentions regarding Venezuela, but he is pressuring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to leave the country. On Monday, Trump said that it would be wise for Maduro to step down.

So far, the efforts have put tremendous pressure on Maduro, and it is believed that by the end of January, Venezuela will face economic disaster if it does not agree to significant concessions to the US.

Trump has accused the South American country of flooding the US with drugs, and his administration has been bombing ships from South America for several months, which it claims are transporting drugs. Many countries have condemned these attacks as illegal killings.
