In Spain, 39 people have been killed in a collision between two high-speed trains in the town of Adamuz in the Spanish province of Cordoba.

Seventy-three people have been hospitalized, 24 of whom are in serious condition, including four minors, according to EFE.

Upon arriving in Adamuz, the head of Spain's railway operator Renfe, Alvaro Fernandez Heredia, noted that it is still difficult to assess the scale of the accident.

Several carriages of the Iryo train, which was travelling from Malaga to Madrid with 300 passengers, derailed and collided with the Alvia train, which was travelling in the opposite direction with 184 passengers on board towards Huelva.

Several carriages of the second train fell down a four-meter slope, making access to the accident site difficult.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente called the accident extremely strange and specified that it occurred on a straight section of track that had been repaired in May, expressing confidence that the investigation would determine the causes.
