The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its escort ships are heading to the Middle East, where they will join two other U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush departed from the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia on March 31. The ship’s transit to the region will take several weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently on a mission in the Arabian Sea. Another ship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is currently in a Croatian port undergoing repairs.
In addition to aircraft carriers, the U.S. presence in the region is being reinforced by other forces. Specifically, amphibious ships and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit entered the waters around Iran last weekend.
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to be deployed to the Middle East and is considering sending an additional 10,000 ground troops.
