Almost 1,000 people killed in Sudan landslide

The tragedy occurred on August 31 after several days of heavy rain. The village, which was buried under rubble, was completely destroyed. Only one person survived.

The group that controls the territory in the Darfur region has appealed to the UN and international humanitarian organizations for help in searching for the bodies of the victims.

"Fleeing the war between the Sudanese army and paramilitary ‘rapid response forces’ in North Darfur state, people sought refuge in the Marra Mountains, where food and medicine are scarce. Two years of civil war have left more than half the population on the brink of starvation and millions of people displaced from their homes. The capital of North Darfur state, El Fasher, continues to be under constant shelling," the Sudan People's Liberation Army said.
