Hungary and Slovakia have refused to approve a new package of EU sanctions against Russia until after the European Council meeting, where sanctions pressure on Russia is to be discussed at the level of EU leaders.
“Two delegations blocked the approval of new sanctions against Russia before the European Council meeting on June 26,” a diplomat said.
He added that Slovakia and Hungary were in question. Thus, the approval of the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia has been blocked, reports “European Pravda”.
On June 23, the European Commission presented to the ambassadors of EU states its proposed latest changes to the 18th package of sanctions, which still contain proposals to lower the price ceiling on Russian oil.
"Some delegations, the more outspoken ones, want to remove the lowering of the price ceiling on Russian oil, given the current state of the international oil market, while others want to keep it. Nevertheless, we are very close to an agreement," another diplomat said.
He expressed hope that the parties will be able to resolve a few remaining issues and present the text at the Coreper meeting for approval on June 27.
