Italy refuses to buy weapons for Ukraine

Sources in the Italian government say they have no plans to buy weapons from the United States and transfer them to Ukraine, La Stampa reports.

One reason is that the Italian weapons systems that have already been provided to Kiev, or may be provided in the future, are based on other technological configurations and will not be compatible with U.S. equipment.

A more important factor is the lack of funds that Italy can commit to financial operations of this type. The only arms purchases from the U.S. that Italy is planning are the previously announced batch of F-35 aircraft planned for the next decade.

According to Italian government officials, the Alliance's only formal request to European countries so far concerns their willingness to handle the logistics of transporting U.S.-provided weapons to Ukraine.

This case is now being discussed by the Italian Defense Ministry. It is still unclear what kind of obligations we are talking about.
