During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump insisted that NATO members take immediate, concrete measures to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has been demanding such commitments for several days. This issue is relevant not only for the US but also for Europe, according to CNN.
The diplomat noted that it was helpful to have a "friend like Rutte" explain to Trump that NATO allies were completely surprised by the US-Israeli war against Iran—which forced some of them to evacuate their citizens from the region—and made it clear to the US president that NATO countries are working as a coalition to help secure the opening of the strait.
"What we see under the leadership of (UK Prime Minister) Keir Starmer and these 34 countries, working closely with the US, is, of course, a shared commitment and agreement that we cannot accept the closure of the Strait. It must be open. And when it is opened, we must keep it open," Rutte emphasized.
After meeting with Rutte on Wednesday, Trump continued to criticize NATO.
