“If there is no response, or if it is negative, I think it will be very bad for NATO's future,” he said.

Trump noted that the U.S. was not obligated to help with Ukraine, according to the Financial Times.

“We have this thing called NATO. We’ve been very kind. We didn’t have to help them with Ukraine. Ukraine is thousands of miles away from us. But we helped them. Now let’s see if they’ll help us. Because I’ve been saying for a long time that we’ll be there for them, but they won’t be there for us. And I’m not sure they’ll be there,” he said.

According to Trump, Europe and China receive a significant portion of their oil through the Strait of Hormuz, so they must join in maintaining order, since they themselves are beneficiaries of this key route.

“It is only logical that those who benefit from the strait will help ensure that nothing bad happens there,” he said.
