According to preliminary results of the parliamentary elections in Slovenia, the two leading political parties—Prime Minister Robert Golob’s liberal “Movement for Freedom” and Janez Janša’s right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party (SDP)—received nearly the same number of votes.
This is evidenced by the results of the count of 99.85% of ballots, reports STA.
The “Movement for Freedom” received 28.62% and is projected to win 29 of the 90 seats. The political movement’s main opponent—the Slovenian Democratic Party—received 27.95% of the vote and 28 seats.
This means that neither party is capable of forming a government on its own and will therefore be forced to seek coalition partners.
Seven other parties that cleared the 5% threshold also entered the Slovenian parliament: “New Slovenia,” which will receive 9 seats, as well as the Social Democrats and the Left-Green Alliance with 6 seats each, and “Democrats” and “Truth” with 5 seats each.
Together with its supporting parties, the liberal party led by incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob will have 40 seats in parliament, while Janez Janša’s SDS will have 43 seats.
