France has refused to buy weapons for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte named four northern European countries, in addition to Britain and the Netherlands, that support the plan to supply U.S. weapons to Ukraine, Politico reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron has long insisted that Europeans develop their own defense industrial base through local purchases.

Paris will not join the U.S. arms purchase initiative for this very reason.

The French government has been trying to increase its own defense spending in an attempt to cut the budget and contain its staggering deficit.

But given Europe's limited production capacity, the government of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes that buying American weapons is one of the only ways to quickly provide Ukraine with the arms it needs.
