King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of His Majesty King Harald. King Harald passed away quietly on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m. at Oslo University Hospital," the Royal Palace of Norway announced.
The King of Norway, who had been undergoing treatment for hemolytic anemia for some time, significantly worsened this week.
Harald, who ascended the Norwegian throne in 1991, had suffered numerous health problems in recent years, forcing him to have a pacemaker installed and reduce his official schedule.
However, he always ruled out abdication, citing the lifelong oath he had taken before the Norwegian Parliament.
Harald V was considered the oldest active monarch in Europe. He held the throne for 35 years.
The heir to the Norwegian throne is his only son, 53-year-old Crown Prince Haakon.
