Riots broke out in Belfast following a knife attack on Monday evening in the north of the city.

Houses and cars were set on fire, and all public transport was suspended, according to the BBC.

A 30-year-old Sudanese man is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder. He also faces charges of possessing a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill. The man, in his 40s, remains in hospital with serious eye, neck, and back injuries following the attack.

Several people, including one carrying an Irish hockey stick, confronted the attacker until police arrived.

Police in Northern Ireland called for calm as "isolated disturbances" broke out across Northern Ireland in response to the attack. People gathered in several locations, including Londonderry, Antrim, Newtownabbey, Ballymena, Bangor, and Belfast.

Some protests were peaceful, but violence erupted in several areas. A group of about 100 masked people in east Belfast kicked down doors and smashed windows. Many of them were teenagers. Dustbins and a bus were also set on fire.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service responded to 62 incidents on Tuesday evening. A heightened police presence will be on the streets in the coming days.
