Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has informed her European and American partners that her country will not send its military to Ukraine as part of future security guarantees.
She took part in a meeting in Paris dedicated to negotiation initiatives to finalize security guarantees for Ukraine.
These guarantees are inspired by Article 5 of the NATO charter, as Italy has long proposed. They will be part of a broader package of agreements to be adopted in close coordination with the US, including an effective and well-structured mechanism for monitoring the future ceasefire and strengthening the Ukrainian armed forces.
“Reaffirming Italy's support for Ukraine's security, in line with what has been done consistently, Prime Minister Meloni reiterated a number of unchanged positions of the Italian government on the issue of guarantees, in particular the refusal to deploy Italian troops on Ukrainian territory,” the Italian government said.
The participation of coalition countries in multinational forces is voluntary, and any decisions to support Ukraine in the event of a new attack must be made in accordance with constitutional procedures.
