U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a plan to punish certain NATO member states that have not provided sufficient support for the operation against Iran.

This plan calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from those countries and their redeployment to nations that have provided significant support for the U.S. campaign in Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Washington may close some military bases in Spain or Germany.

This move differs from Trump’s recent threats to withdraw the U.S. entirely from the Alliance, which he cannot legally do without congressional approval.

This plan is currently in the early stages of discussion and is just one of several scenarios being considered by the Trump administration.

It underscores the growing rift between Washington and its European partners following the U.S. decision to launch military operations in Iran. The initiative has already gained support among key officials in the Trump administration.
