Passenger train derails in Switzerland due to avalanche

The incident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. on Monday on the Frutigen-Brig line, between the towns of Goppenstein and Brig. The train, carrying approximately 80 passengers, derailed, which is believed to be related to the avalanche.

There are casualties as a result of the incident, according to RTS.

The railway operator said that trains on this line would not run until at least 4:00 p.m.

Last Thursday, an avalanche buried a section of the cantonal road near Goppenstein, closing it for several hours. No one was injured at that time.

The highest avalanche danger levels have been in effect in the canton for several days.
