U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance called the demands Russia made during negotiations to settle the war in Ukraine too big.
“We knew that Russia would ask for too much because the Russian perception of the war on the ground is that they are winning. And, of course, the Ukrainians would like to reach a cease-fire, particularly because the last few months have not been easy for them. Our position is that we don't want Ukraine to collapse. We obviously want Ukraine to remain a sovereign state, but Russia cannot expect to be given territories that it hasn't even seized yet. And that's exactly what it proposed in the original peace plan,” J.D. Vance told Fox News.
Vance called it progress that Russia and Ukraine are involved in negotiations and offering concrete peace plans. He noted that the U.S. would pull out of the talks if it realizes that the Russians are not participating in the negotiations and are not acting sincerely.
“And if that happens - yes, we will withdraw. The president will say: we are withdrawing from this process. And that will mean, essentially, that Russia and Ukraine will have to resolve this issue on their own - without advice and without mediation from the United States. And I do not think that this is good for us, neither for Russia nor for Ukraine,” he emphasized.
In his opinion, there are some diplomatic breakthroughs in the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“We should try to bring these sides even closer together to reach a sustainable peace. We are not there yet. We're going to work on it until we decide that it's impossible to advance any further. And then we will come out,” he said.
