The U.S. Department of Justice announced the creation of a $1.776 billion fund to compensate Trump supporters who claim they have been unfairly targeted by the Biden administration.
This unprecedented move would allow such individuals to receive payments funded by taxpayers, CNN reports.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that his allies have been unfairly persecuted—such as in the mass prosecution of active participants in the January 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol.
“This will be compensation for people who were treated horribly. They will be reimbursed for legal fees and everything else they had to go through,” Trump said.
A five-member commission is set to manage the fund, with Trump having the authority to fire any of its members. All claims are expected to be processed by December 15, 2028—one month before the end of Trump’s second term.
The Justice Department noted that Trump himself will not receive anything as part of this initiative.
The initiative is expected to face significant resistance from Democrats and civic organizations that monitor the spending of public funds.
