US President Donald Trump has told his national security team that any US military action in Iran should strike the regime quickly and decisively and not lead to a prolonged war.
Trump's advisers have so far been unable to guarantee him that the regime will fall quickly after US intervention, NBC News reports.
There are concerns that the US may not have all the necessary resources in the region to defend against the aggressive response from Iran that administration officials expect.
This dynamic could force Trump to approve a more limited US military operation in Iran, at least initially, if he decides to take any military action at all.
The situation is changing rapidly, and as of Wednesday afternoon, no decisions had been made.
Trump is prepared to fulfill his repeated promises to protesters in Iran that the US will intervene militarily to support their efforts to overthrow the regime.
He has outlined to his national security team what he wants to achieve from any US military action in Iran, and the Department of Defense has prepared options that meet his objectives. These options were to be presented to Trump on Wednesday.
