Turkey played a unique role in the Istanbul talks, as it has traditionally close ties with both Moscow and Kiev.

“Turkey has traditional cooperation with both Russia and Ukraine, which allows them to establish an important dialog,” said U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barak.
Turkey remains an important NATO ally, but also maintains a broader influence in the region - particularly in Syria, but also in the context of peace initiatives on Ukraine.
Separately, he mentioned the personal relationship between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Barrack, these ties can be the basis for strengthening the partnership between the countries.
He added that Trump's patience regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine is “running out.”
