The UK will not grant the US access to Royal Air Force airbases to carry out any strikes against bridges or power plants in Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to unleash “hell” on Iran’s key civilian infrastructure if Tehran does not open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, reports The i Paper.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously stated that access by the U.S. military to British bases should be limited to actions that weaken Iran’s defense capabilities, such as missile silos or storage depots, which could be used to threaten the interests of London or its allies in the Persian Gulf.
U.S. attacks on bridges and power plants do not fall under this definition, and if Washington requests to use British bases for such operations, it will be denied.
The U.S. requests permission to use Royal Air Force bases on a case-by-case basis. No such request regarding potential strikes on Iranian bridges and power plants has been received yet.
