US halts arms and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine

The decision was made by Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby after a review of the Pentagon's ammunition stockpile raised concerns about a reduction in the total number of artillery shells, anti-aircraft missiles and precision weapons, Politico reported.

The initial decision to suspend some of the aid pledged by the Biden administration was made in early June, but only took effect now that Ukraine is reflecting some of the largest Russian missile and drone strikes on civilian targets in Kiev and other cities.

The Pentagon's decision to suspend some supplies has raised concerns among Ukraine's allies in Congress that the country will remain vulnerable to further Russian attacks.

According to NBC News, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered a temporary suspension of a number of arms and ammunition shipments to Ukraine.

The ammunition and other weapons may remain delayed until an ongoing assessment by U.S. defense authorities is completed.

If the ammunition is found to be in short supply or needed for other regions, the delay may be extended.

The detained weapons include dozens of Patriot missile defense interceptors, thousands of 155mm high-explosive artillery shells, more than 100 Hellfire guided missiles, more than 250 GMLRS precision missile systems, and dozens of Stinger man-portable anti-aircraft missiles, air-to-air missiles and AIM grenade launchers.

"This decision was made to put America's interests first after reviewing the Departments national support and our nation's assistance to other countries around the world. The strength of the United States Armed Forces remains unrivaled - just ask Iran," said White House Deputy Press Secretary Anne Kelly.
