Sanctions
The US imposed sanctions on 13 individuals and entities in Iran, Belarus, and China, particularly Hong Kong, who attempted to acquire weapons for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
These sanctioned individuals attempted to source and acquire weapons, specifically man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), on behalf of the IRGC.
"These sanctions measures continue our efforts to disrupt procurement networks supporting Iran's military programs and to weaken Iran's ability to conduct military activities in the region," the US State Department stated.
These steps by Washington further implement UN sanctions against Iran, which were reimposed due to the country's failure to meet its nuclear obligations. UN Security Council Resolution 1929 requires member states to prevent the supply or transfer of conventional weapons, including man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), to Iran.
