US is preparing to seize Greenland

US President Donald Trump previously openly threatened to seize this strategically important Arctic island, which not only alienated Denmark, a NATO partner, but also raised doubts about the cohesion and loyalty of the world's largest military alliance, dpa reports.

He justified this by arguing that Danish territory would otherwise be vulnerable to Russia and China and therefore pose a threat to US security interests.

"We continue to believe this is the best way to meet NATO's defense needs for Greenland," he said.

He said other options were being considered, although he did not specify them.

A senior American official noted the intense naval activity in the region around Greenland and noted that Trump is seeking a solution that will be relevant beyond his presidency.

"And at this point, the only solution we've found to resolve this issue is for Greenland to join the United States," the official added.
