Deputy Chief of Staff to the President Stephen Miller said that Washington insists that Greenland should become part of the US as part of the American security system.
"The president has been clear for months: The United States should be a nation that includes Greenland as part of our overall security apparatus. I just want to clarify that this has been the official position of the US government since the beginning of this administration, and frankly, since the previous Trump administration: Greenland should be part of the United States. The president has been very clear on this," he said.
He was asked if he could rule out a scenario in which the US would try to take Greenland by force. In response, Miller avoided answering, but questioned the legitimacy of Denmark's control over the island, CNN reports.
"The real question is, by what right did Denmark declare control over Greenland? What is the basis for their territorial claims? On what basis is Greenland a colony of Denmark? The United States is a NATO power. In order for the US to protect the Arctic region, protect NATO and the interests of the Alliance, it is obvious that Greenland must be part of the United States. We are a superpower, and under President Trump, we will act like a superpower," he said.
