President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the turning point in his relationship with US President Donald Trump was a brief face-to-face meeting in the Vatican, which took place in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in April 2025.
Zelenskyy was reminded of the conflict in the Oval Office in 2025, when J.D. Vance suggested giving Trump's diplomacy a chance to resolve the war, to which Zelenskyy responded in detail that diplomacy with Russia had failed since 2014, according to European Pravda.
It now appears that relations between the two presidents have significantly improved.
"Absolutely. We had our first turning point in Rome, in the Vatican. It was a short meeting, but I always said that, in my view, it was a historic moment, because in 15-20 minutes we changed our relationship," he said.
According to Zelenskyy, no one was present during the meeting except the two of them.
He noted that he would not disclose the details of the conversation, but emphasized that a trusting dialogue between the leaders is of great importance.
"I am very happy, because the lives of so many people depend on such a relationship and such a dialogue," he concluded.
