Starmer may resign

The future of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in question amid a scandal surrounding former US Ambassador Peter Mendelsohn, who is involved in the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Bloomberg sources report disputes within the Labour Party leadership, as well as officials preparing for ministers to privately ask Starmer to resign or threaten to resign themselves if he does not.

One cabinet aide said Starmer's chances of staying in office until the end of the week were 50-50.

On Sunday, it was announced that Morgan Maxviney, the head of the British prime minister's office, had resigned.

Several Labour Party MPs accused Maxviney of appointing a former Labour Party penman as ambassador to the United States.

Starmer spent several days considering whether he could afford to continue without Maxviney.

The loss of the ideologue behind Labour's convincing victory in the 2024 election leaves the prime minister defenceless at a time when disillusioned members of the government are demanding change at the top.

Health Minister Wes Strating or former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner could replace Starmer.

Some in the ruling party expect Starmer to try to strengthen his position by inviting left-wing figures such as Rayner into the cabinet and promoting politicians such as Energy Minister Ed Miliband, himself a former party leader.

But others doubt that Reiner will agree to join the government, as she is now one step closer to taking Starmer's place.

One Labour Party member said that the only way for Starmer to hold on until the local elections in May is to be a “lame duck,” while his rivals use this time to prepare for the fight.

Reiner is now considered the favorite for the post of prime minister. However, Labour Party representatives have named at least six other candidates, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Several representatives of the Labour Party's right wing have suggested that Defence Secretary John Gillian should take the position.

The scandal was sparked by the US Department of Justice's publication of Epstein's files, which suggest that Peter Mendelsohn, appointed by Starmer as ambassador to the US, apparently sent Epstein details of sensitive economic discussions within the British government.
