The EU intends to impose sanctions on China for its support of Russia in its war against Ukraine.
The EU decided to take this step after Reuters published a report revealing that Russia had secretly obtained Chinese engines for drones, according to Politico.
The engines were sent to Russia through front companies under the guise of “industrial refrigeration units” to circumvent Western sanctions.
This report caused alarm in Brussels. Fifteen EU countries approached Beijing with questions about these deliveries, but China either denied involvement or refused to respond.
“The report is accurate and shows that China is strengthening its role both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is fair to say that without China's support, the war would look very different now,” the diplomat said.
According to him, the EU knew about Chinese drone deliveries to Russia even before the reports appeared in the press.
“After August, we will insist on imposing sanctions,” the diplomat said.
He added that the EU should not underestimate its economic influence: “We want dialogue, but we also want action.”
