U.S. President Donald Trump is considering withdrawing American military forces from Italy and Spain due to those countries’ refusal to support the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
When asked if he was considering withdrawing American troops from Italy and Spain, Trump replied: “Possibly. Why not? Italy hasn’t helped us at all, and Spain has behaved terribly - absolutely terribly.”
According to him, a decision to reduce the U.S. presence in Europe could be made in the near future.
According to data from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), as of December 2025, there were just over 68,000 military personnel stationed at U.S. overseas bases in Europe. More than half of them -about 36,400 - are deployed in Germany.
