U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting on Iran on Monday evening, during which he was presented with possible options for military action.

The meeting took place a few hours after he announced the suspension of the attacks that had been scheduled for Tuesday, according to Axios.

The meeting was attended by Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House Envoy Steve Whitecoff, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kane, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and other high-ranking officials.

The focus was on next steps in the war with Iran, the progress of diplomatic efforts, and various U.S. military plans to strike Iran.

A source close to Trump reported that several “hawks” on Iran who spoke with the president after his statement on Monday got the impression that he was determined to give them a hard time to force them to make progress in the negotiations.

Many other officials were surprised by Trump’s statement on Monday and admit they do not understand which direction he is heading. Some believe he may postpone a decision again if no diplomatic breakthrough is achieved.

Trump said serious negotiations are underway, although a senior official reported that Iran’s latest counterproposal did not demonstrate significant progress.

Mediators are working to get the Iranians to adopt a more flexible position that takes into account U.S. demands regarding the nuclear program.
