President Donald Trump informed Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa of his decision to remove Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The letter was handed to al-Sharaa after his meeting with Trump in Ankara on July 8. He noted that he had already informed the U.S. Congress of his decision, Reuters reports.

"I promised to remove all obstacles preventing you from rebuilding your country, and very soon you will finally be able to do so. We have American companies ready to invest in Syria and help make your country greater and more prosperous than ever before," Trump wrote.

Syrian Central Bank Governor Safwat Raslan emphasized that Washington's move opens much broader prospects for attracting foreign investment, overall economic recovery, and the country's full reintegration into the global economy.

In the wake of this decision, several major Saudi companies are already planning billion-dollar investments in Syria as part of Riyadh's efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure. Other Gulf states have also pledged financial assistance to Damascus.

Trump publicly supported the Syrian leader.

"He is respected by everyone, including me. He is doing an incredible job of uniting the country," Trump said.

Syria's status as a state sponsor of terrorism, which it held for nearly five decades, imposed severe restrictions on the country. These affected the provision of any foreign aid from the United States, defense exports, and international financial transactions.
