US promises privileges to NATO allies

A NATO leaders' summit will take place in Ankara next week. US President Donald Trump is demanding that allies spend at least 5% of GDP on defense and has threatened consequences for those who refuse, according to the Financial Times.

Trump is angry with countries that have restricted access to their airspace or bases for US aircraft involved in the war against Iran.

"You know, Ankara will really be an indicator of progress in fulfilling this commitment. We believe that those who invest more should receive benefits for it," said US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.

He was referring to opportunities: whether it's more time for meetings with leaders, or procurement priorities and delivery.

"There are many ways this can be accomplished," he said.

Whitaker stated that the review of the number of American troops deployed in Europe will be based on military threats and the requirements to counter them, and will not be subject to any political influence.

The issues that some countries, particularly Italy and Spain, have objected to regarding US assistance in the war against Iran will be addressed separately.

"We will also negotiate with our allies on base access and overflight issues and ensure we reach agreement on how the bases can be used," he said, noting that the conclusions will need to be agreed upon with these allies.
