Half of the US Senate, led by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, have introduced a bipartisan bill to impose sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin disrupts the US president's peace efforts on Ukraine.
Sanctions introduced by 50 U.S. senators would be enacted if peace talks fail or an agreement is reached but Russia violates it, European Pravda reported.
Among the penalties the law could lead to are 500 percent duties on imported goods from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other Russian products.
“The dominant view in the U.S. Senate is that Russia is the aggressor and that this terrible war and Putin's aggression must stop now and be contained in the future. The sanctions against Russia require imposing tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products. They are tough for a reason,” US senators said.
US President Donald Trump has expressed irritation over Vladimir Putin's stalling of ceasefire talks. Senators who supported the draft on primary and secondary sanctions against Russia share the same sense of irritation.
“We share President Trump's frustration with Russia when it comes to the ceasefire and support President Trump's desire to achieve a lasting, just and dignified peace. In 1994, as part of the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine gave up approximately 1,700 nuclear weapons in exchange for a promise by the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom to respect Ukraine's sovereignty in the future. This failed to deter Russian aggression. In 2014 and 2015, the Minsk agreements were reached, which ended Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but again, this did nothing to deter future aggression. In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine again, killing hundreds of thousands of people and displacing millions,” the U.S. lawmakers added.
During talks in Saudi Arabia, Russian negotiators urged the U.S. to help lift sanctions on Russian banks and promote Russian fertilizer and agricultural products on the global market before agreeing to a ceasefire.
“We hope that in 2025, President Trump and his team will accomplish what has eluded the world in the past: permanently ending Russian aggression against Ukraine and ensuring the survival of a free and democratic Ukraine. These sanctions against Russia are ready and will receive overwhelming bipartisan, bicameral support if presented for a vote in the Senate and House of Representatives,” the lawmakers wrote.
