For the first time since the start of the war, EU leaders agreed to extend sanctions against Russia for 12 months, rather than six.

This decision was made following a European Council meeting, which began with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and continued after his departure with EU leaders, according to European Pravda.

These talks lasted approximately 3.5 hours in total.

"The discussions on Ukraine are concluded. EU leaders accepted the conclusions of the summit on Ukraine and decided to extend sanctions against Russia for 12 months," said Maria Tomasik, press secretary for the President of the European Council.

The decision to extend sanctions for 12 months set a precedent for the EU, as for the past 10 years, including throughout the full-scale war, EU member states had to renew sanctions every six months, giving individual capitals, including Budapest, the opportunity to negotiate. The change in the timeframe became possible after Orbán's election defeat.
