The EU is concerned about the presence of Iranian military attachés in many countries.
A classified European document states that some Iranian military attachés in European countries may be active IRGC officers operating under diplomatic cover, according to Euractiv.
There are concerns that these individuals, linked to a sanctioned organization, thus enjoy the advantages afforded by diplomatic status and freedom of movement within the EU.
Among those mentioned is Iran’s military attaché in Poland, Mohammad Naghizadeh.
The document points out that with the start of the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran and the elimination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the IRGC has only grown in strength, and its commander, Ahmad Vahidi, has effectively become the key decision-maker in the country, controlling the security forces and setting the course for negotiations with the U.S.
The report recommends imposing sanctions and expelling Iranian military attachés and diplomats from EU countries who are likely linked to the IRGC, arguing that this will ensure even greater international isolation of Tehran and limit the organization’s capabilities.
